Planning your first Orlando theme park vacation can feel like a LOT, but it doesn’t have to be. Start by deciding how many days you have, which parks matter most to you, where you want to stay, and which experiences are absolute must-dos. From there, build your trip around those priorities instead of trying to do everything (and check out our theme park guides below for everything we’ve learned exploring Disney World and Universal Orlando ourselves!).

There really isn’t one perfect time — it depends on what matters most to you! January and February can bring lighter crowds and cooler weather, while fall means Halloween Horror Nights and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. The holidays are absolutely gorgeous, but expect heavier crowds, especially around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

A Disney World vacation can vary wildly depending on when you visit, how long you stay, where you sleep, and how you like to travel. A shorter trip staying off-property and eating mostly quick-service meals can be relatively affordable, while a week at a Deluxe Disney Resort with Park Hopper tickets, table-service dining, and extras can easily cost several thousand dollars. The best approach is to set your budget first, then decide where you want to splurge and where you'd be perfectly happy saving.

Our essentials are comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a portable charger, refillable water bottle, and a small rain poncho or umbrella. Florida weather can go from beautiful sunshine to torrential downpour and back again surprisingly quickly, so always prepare accordingly! Also, contrary to popular belief, you can bring any non-alcoholic drinks and snacks into the aprk with you!

If you can only choose one, Magic Kingdom is the quintessential Walt Disney World experience. Cinderella Castle, classic attractions, characters, fireworks... it’s basically the park most people picture when they think "Disney World.” That said, the best park for you may depend on your interests.

For pure thrills, we’d give Islands of Adventure a serious look thanks to attractions like Jurassic World VelociCoaster and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. Hollywood Studios is fantastic for immersive attractions, Magic Kingdom has the classics, and Epic Universe has quickly become a powerhouse of its own. There’s no universal winner (pun unfortunately intended 😝).

It depends on your trip. Staying on-property can offer convenient transportation, immersive theming, and resort-specific perks, while off-property hotels can offer more space or better value. If most of your vacation revolves around one resort, staying there usually makes your trip considerably easier.

There’s no single “adult park,” but EPCOT is an easy recommendation thanks to the World Showcase, festivals, food, drinks, and attractions. Hollywood Studios is great for Star Wars and thrill ride lovers, while Animal Kingdom is fantastic if you want a slower-paced day with a WILD-ly incredible atmosphere!

There’s almost always something special happening at the parks! EPCOT’s seasonal festivals bring rotating food, drinks, entertainment, and activities throughout much of the year, while fall brings fan favorites like Halloween Horror Nights at Universal and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom. The holidays transform both resorts with seasonal entertainment and events, and Universal’s Mardi Gras (one of our personal favorite events) is another great reason to visit in the spring. If one of these events is a must-do for you, it can absolutely be worth planning your vacation dates around it.

Disney does own Marvel, but Universal secured theme-park rights to many Marvel characters in the Orlando area years before Disney bought the company. That longstanding agreement is why you’ll find Spider-Man, Wolverine, Hulk, Captain America and other Marvel heroes at Marvel Super Hero Island in Universal’s Islands of Adventure instead of Walt Disney World. 

Disney can use certain Marvel characters that aren’t restricted by that agreement, which is why EPCOT has Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.  So if you’re visiting Orlando hoping to meet Spider-Man or the Avengers, Universal — not Disney World — is currently where you’ll want to look.

Yes, one day is enough to experience the park’s highlights with a good plan, but seeing everything (rides, shows, restaurants, interactive elements, and just exploring the worlds) is another story. For a first visit, we’d dedicate at least one full day and avoid treating Epic like something you can squeeze into half a day.

They can be, especially if you like flexibility. At Disney World, Park Hopper lets you start at one park and finish your day somewhere else for dinner, another ride, or a nighttime spectacular. At Universal Orlando, Park-to-Park admission is especially useful because Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure are right next to each other (and you’ll need it if you want to ride the Hogwarts Express between the two parks!).

Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure really work as a pair. Islands has Hogsmeade and Hogwarts Castle, while Studios has Diagon Alley (Hogwarts Express connects the two). Epic Universe adds the Ministry of Magic into the equation, so serious Potterheads now have plenty to explore across the resort!

Trying to do everything is probably number one. Overplanning every minute, underestimating Florida weather, wearing bad shoes, skipping breaks, and forgetting travel time between destinations can turn a vacation into an endurance event. Have priorities, but leave enough flexibility to actually enjoy being there!
